This fado house is located in Alfama, one of the most typical of Lisbon. The Taverna d’el Rey offers, in the ambience of the old Lisbon, the fado and specialties of traditional Portuguese cuisine. Having initially been a tavern for the sale of charcoal and wine, it was acquired by the fadista Maria Jô-Jô more than thirty years ago. The owner remodeled the space, decorating the ceiling with wood to remind the caravels used by the Portuguese in the Discoveries and coating the floor with Portuguese sidewalk. In the Taverna d’el Rey there are performances every night from 6 pm to 3 am.
