“Royal Blossoms and Baroque Beauty: A Visit to the Lisbon Garden of the Palace of Queluz”

Home » Listing » Lisbon Tourist Attractions » Palace of Queluz

🏰 The Palace of Queluz, situated in the charming town of Queluz just outside Lisbon toward Sintra, is a remarkable 18th-century royal residence that encapsulates the opulence and grandeur of the Portuguese monarchy during that era. Built in the 1740s, this palace was originally conceived as a summer retreat for the royal family, and it continues to serve as one of the main Sintra attractions for tourists. Visitors should be aware that the Palace is located outside the city centre and is not walkable, so you will need transport if coming from the metropolis.

🌳 The palace’s scenic gardens are a joy—sumptuous parties once filled these grounds, complete with gondola trips along the canal, theatrical performances, and open-air recitals. Today, as one meanders through these lush gardens, it’s easy to imagine the echoes of past laughter and the delicate melodies of classical music that once filled the air, all enhanced by the play of waterfalls and charming water features.

🛠️ The transformation of the Queluz estate into the grand residence we see today began with Prince Pedro, who would become King Pedro III. Under his vision and the expertise of architects like Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Jean-Baptiste Robillion, the “Old Palace” was expanded and refined. This included the creation of grand reception halls such as the Throne Room and the Ambassadors Room, which became stages for the royal family’s leisure and the court’s resplendent social scene.

🎭 After a devastating fire at the Royal Complex of Ajuda, Queluz became the official residence of Queen Maria I and later the Prince Regents João VI and Carlota Joaquina. Despite these changes, the palace continued to be a site of extravagant leisure activities, from serenades to firework displays, marking it as a haven of cultural and social extravagance.

🏛️ However, the palace’s vibrant life was not to last. With the Napoleonic invasions and the political turmoil that followed, Queluz’s golden era dimmed. The palace witnessed the rise and fall of monarchs, the intrigue of conspiracies, and the turmoil of civil war. It was within these walls that the absolutist Miguel and the liberal Pedro IV, his brother, vied for the future of Portugal—a battle that would end with Pedro’s abdication and death in the very room where he was born.

🏅 Recognized for its historical and cultural significance, the National Palace of Queluz was declared a National Monument in 1910. Its prominence continued into the 20th century, serving as the residence for visiting heads of state. Parques de Sintra’s management, which began in 2012, ushered in an era of restoration, most notably returning the palace to its original blue hue and rejuvenating the Botanical Garden—a project honored with two European Union Awards for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards.

📚 The establishment of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art in the gardens and the creation of the D. Diogo de Bragança, VIII Marquis of Marialva Equestrian Art Library, housing over 1,400 works dedicated to this noble art, reflects the palace’s ongoing commitment to cultural preservation and education.
